From Curiosity to Calling: Why I Created Her Wealth, Her Way

Updated: Jan 26

By Michelle Cho, CFP®, BFA™, ChSNC® | Founder, Echo Wealth Partners

I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a financial planner.

My first love was science—physics, to be exact. I studied physics at UC San Diego and pursued graduate research in high-energy physics at Cornell, drawn to the elegance of equations and the quest to understand the true nature of the universe. I believed that with enough curiosity, logic, and persistence, we could unlock the deepest truths about how the world works and solve the global problems that weigh on our humanity as well.

But life isn’t an equation.

I left physics and, like many people in their 20s, felt a bit adrift until my son was born. With him came a new sense of purpose.

And then 2008 happened.

The Great Recession shook the foundation of people’s lives. I watched as friends, colleagues, and neighbors lost their homes, jobs, retirement savings and sense of security. It made me ask:

How does our financial system really work and why does it fail so many people? Why are everyday people always the ones who suffer most?

That moment sparked a new kind of curiosity, one that would eventually change the course of my life.

From Markets to Meaning

I began reading everything I could about the economy, the markets, investing and personal finance. That path even led me to a short stint as a junior trader at a hedge fund. But the deeper I went, the more I realized:

Money touches every part of our lives. Yet most of us—especially women—are never truly taught how to manage it with clarity or confidence.

Instead of empowerment, we often inherit fear, shame, and overwhelm. We all have our own money script that dictates financial choices we make everyday.

Even as a high-earning single mom working in tech and finance, I found myself asking:

  • Am I doing the right things with my money?

  • What truly matters to me?

  • Am I building a life with purpose or just reacting to it?

That was my turning point.

Turning Purpose into a Profession

I became a Certified Financial Planner™ professional and Behavioral Financial Advisor™ to help others find what I had been searching for: Not just financial strategies, but financial clarity and alignment with their values.

I founded Echo Wealth Partners to serve women—especially in science, tech, healthcare, and business—who want to make empowered decisions about their wealth and legacy.

Because I believe this deeply:

When more women take control of their finances and invest in alignment with their values, we can address global challenges and drive systemic change.

Her Wealth, Her Way

Financial planning isn’t just about spreadsheets and investments.  It’s about designing a life that reflects your values, protects what you care about, and brings peace of mind.

That’s why I wrote my first eBook: 7 Principles of Financial Independence, to help women lay a strong foundation for wealth aligned with purpose.

And Her Wealth, Her Way is where the conversation continues.

Whether you're preparing for retirement, navigating complex financial decisions, or just want more clarity and confidence, this space is for you.
